The good candidates for Lap-Band weight loss surgery

In February 2011, the FDA gives the new criteria of Lap-Band weight loss surgery :

  • You are an adult, at least 18 years old.
  • BMI > 40. This is the equivalent of being about 100 pounds overweight for men and 80 pounds overweight for women.
  • BMI > 30 in combination with a related health condition such as type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, heart disease, or sleep apnea.

Some of the important recommendations made by the NIH are

  • You have suffered from morbid obesity for at least 5 years.
  • Your serious attempts to lose weight have had only short-term success.
  • You do not have any other disease that may have caused you to be overweight.
  • You are prepared to make major changes in your eating habits and lifestyle, do not drink alcohol in excess.
  • You are motivated and have an acceptable operative risk.

The Lap-Band® weight loss surgery is not right for you if

  • You have an inflammatory disease or condition of the gastrointestinal tract, such as ulcers, severe esophagitis, or Crohns disease.
  • Your esophagus, stomach, or intestine is not normal. Such as bleeding, gastric perforation or other congenital or acquired disease.
  • You have severe heart or lung disease or other disease. Such as cirrhosis, chronic pancreatitis.
  • You have an autoimmune connective tissue disease.
  • You might be allergic to materials in the device.
  • You are pregnant. You can get pregnant after Lap-Band surgery, but you cannot be pregnant when you have the surgery.
