Continuity of care is important; avoid facilities that make
you feel like a number in an assembly line. The surgeon should
be the one working with you before, during, and after the
procedure.
Experience is important; don't be the surgeon's first LASIK
patient. It is not necessary to be swayed by a surgeon's claim
that he or she has performed thousands of procedures in a year -
that type of surgeon was likely performing surgeries in an
assembly line environment. Skilled and knowledgeable surgeons
will have performed at least a few hundred procedures.
Choose a LASIK surgeon that you feel you can communicate
with. Much of the success of the LASIK experience is related to
the patient's comfort level in communicating with the surgeon
and staff.
The technology that is available in the US consists of
Excimer laser machines that are FDA approved. There are several
excellent machines from companies such as VISX, LaserSight,
Chiron, Autonomous and others.
Thanks to the careful scrutiny of the FDA, there is no one
machine that can be considered vastly superior to another. Don’t
be fooled by advertising – you should see through the marketing
hype and always remember that it is more important to trust the
surgeon operating the machine.
