What's the Flap and why the Flap is so important ?

Chances are, you've probably heard the phrase "bladeless LASIK" and have wondered what it is and why it's becoming a very popular option among both patients and doctors.

It all begins with the critical first step of LASIK, the creation of the flap.

In the past, doctors traditionally created the flap using a microkeratome, a hand-held surgical instrument with an oscillating metal blade used to cut the flap. While results were generally good, achieving accurate depth and flap thickness on a curved cornea of varying dimension can be difficult with a microkeratome. The precision of this step is highly dependent upon the performance of the microkeratome device, which may be unpredictable despite a high degree of doctor skill.

Then, innovative research led to the creation of a breakthrough technology called the IntraLase Method, often referred to as "bladeless LASIK."

The Most Accurate Technology Available
The IntraLase Method eliminates the need for the doctor to use a blade at all. Instead, this computer-controlled laser technology works by delivering rapid pulses of light, a quadrillionth of a second each, to a pre-programmed depth and position within the cornea.

In contrast to a microkeratome, which simply delivers a one-dimensional cut, the IntraLase Method enables the doctor to precisely design and control many aspects of the flap itself, such as its thickness, its circumference, and the angle of its edges, effectively tailoring the flap to the eye. This is of particular benefit to patients with steep, flat, or thin corneas, some of whom are not eligible for LASIK surgery performed with a microkeratome.

The IntraLase ultra-fast femtosecond laser is the first bladeless laser technology for performing LASIK and the most accurate technology for corneal flap creation available today.
